不垢不淨 They are neither defiled nor pure. 心的本質＝空。
They are neither defiled nor pure.
五濁惡世是污垢的，涅槃是清淨的。
是嗎？真的是這樣的嗎？
如果以第一義的眼光來看的話，
其實根本沒有所謂髒或乾淨，輪迴或涅槃的差別，
因為它只是它，不會因為外在的乾淨與否而改變，
故心經再度標指出空的特性──不垢不淨。
其實無論代換成任何相對詞，
它都是能夠繼續說下去的，
例如〝不高不低〞、〝不上不下〞、〝不尊不卑〞……。
The evil world with five kinds of turbidity surroundings is defiled. The Nirvana, the state of permanence, is pure. Is it so? Is it really so?
From the standpoint of “the supreme reality (enlightenment)”, there is no distinction between defiled and pure. There is no difference between Samsara and Nirvana.
It is it! The real state of all things is empty. Defilement or purity makes no difference on them. Heart Sutra points out another nature of Emptiness “Neither defiled nor pure”!
Drawing endless analogy to other counterpart terms, we obtain the following: Neither high nor low! Neither up nor down! Neither superiors nor inferiors! These analogies will keep on going and going, until people recognize that the world acting like real is no more than an illusion.
