Enlightened Thinking ~ A Buddhist View of Goodness & Beauty
Everything Is Illusion
Article/Spring Wind Translator/Hui-Rong
The essence of the Buddha-dharma is it impressively shows us that everything is illusion. It is a right view that we should work very hard to comprehend. If we can¡¦t understand it, we will stick around in illusions, can not awake from them and finally get lost.
Why everything is illusion? It is because the tools we use are very imperfect. It means our eyes, ears, noses, tongues, bodies and senses are limited tools. Think about this: Would the message collected by these limited tools be completely correct? Take eyes as an example, scientists already proved that eyes can¡¦t see everything, e.g. viruses, infrared rays, living beings who live in the third dimension and so on. If we get used to believe all of eyes see are just all the realities, according to the inference, belief that comes from habitude is doubtful.
Observing from the fact that what eyes can see is limited; consequently, it is incorrect to think we can get everything through eyes. At least what we can get through eyes is incomplete. It is much worse when the six senses work together incorrectly or incompletely at the same time. It would make us go further and further from truths through that way. So, from now on, no longer totally count on our eyes, ears, noses, tongues, bodies and senses. If we do this, it means we understand everything is illusion and we are starting leaving illusions.
¡§Everything is illusion.¡¨ is a truth be found, not be invented. All truths the Buddha-dharma reveals are found, not be invented. That is to say, truths exist as the ways they are. They won¡¦t change whether we understand them or not. Therefore, the clearer the truth we see, the clearer we know how to live right. The existence of Life is also one manifestation of truths. We could not live better if we just live but don¡¦t know the truth of life. Therefore, in order to live better, it is necessary for us to see all truths clear. All truths are closely related to our lives. In all truths of life, the truth ¡§Everything is illusion.¡¨ is most important.
Only if we leave illusions behind can we leave the restraints that illusions cause to us and can we be free men men to be free from samsara and achieve the goal in Buddha¡¦s Noble Path.
